freedmlogoThe Future Renewable Electrical Energy Delivery and Management Systems Center is one of the Gen-III Engineering Research Centers (ERC) established by the National Science Foundation in 2008. The FREEDM Systems Center is partnering with universities, industry, and national laboratories in 28 states and nine countries to develop technology to revolutionize the nation's power grid and speed renewable electric-energy technologies into every home and business. The center is supported by an initial five-year, $18.5 million grant from NSF with an additional $10 million in institutional support and industry membership fees. More than 60 utility companies, electrical equipment manufacturers, alternative energy start-ups, and other established and emerging firms are part of this global partnership.

jul13eWho Can Participate
Teachers and students from partner schools are eligible to apply for summer programs.

Teachers

The Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) in Engineering program supports the active involvement of high school teachers in engineering research in order to bring knowledge of engineering and technological innovation into their classrooms. Teachers will learn about the engineering research in Center laboratories and will translate this new knowledge of engineering into classroom activities. The goal is to involve precollege teachers in the Center's research to enable them to develop course modules to bring engineering concepts into the classroom to inform pre-college students about engineering. These Research Experiences are available to teachers from partner schools who anticipate teaching science, mathematics, or technology during the next school year. You will be asked to teach activities developed during the summer in your classes. Stipends are paid for summer dates and CEU credits are available.Teaching materials are provided for each participant.

Students
High School Rising Juniors and Seniors:
Young Scholar research experiences are available to students nominated by teachers at partner schools. You will observe Center faculty and graduate students and learn about the work in the Center laboratories during the summer and participate in hands-on activities and field trips. You will be asked to prepare a research project to submit to the International Science and Engineering Fair in your area or the equivalent. You will earn a stipend for summer participation, receive a Center certificate, and an additional payment for submitting your project.

Middle School Rising 9th graders:
A weeklong summer camp will be held for NC State partner schools, Tallahassee partner schools, and Arizona State partner schools. These camps inspire girls and boys to pursue careers in engineering, science, mathematics, or technology. Campers will learn about FREEDM Systems Center research laboratories, engage in hands-on activities, participate in career and college exploration activities, and experience field trips or tours. Priority will be given to students completing their 8th grade year in middle school, but students in grades 6 through 9 may apply.
