Information on Summer Programs
FREEDM Overview and Experiments
This project is an Engineering Research Center Grant funded by the National Science Foundation and industry partners (Award #0812121, Division of Engineering Education and Centers).
FREEDM Precollege Outreach sponsors summer programs for teachers and students.
Teachers
The Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) in Engineering program supports the active involvement of high school and middle school teachers in engineering research in order to bring knowledge of engineering and technological innovation into their classrooms. Teachers will be able to observe engineering research in Center laboratories and will translate their research experiences and new knowledge of engineering into classroom activities. The goal is to involve precollege teachers in the Center's research to enable them to develop course modules to bring engineering concepts into the classroom to inform precollege students about engineering. These Research Experiences are available to teachers from partner schools who anticipate teaching science, mathematics, or technology during the next school year. You will be asked to teach activities developed during the summer in your classes. Stipends are paid for summer dates and CEU credits are available.Teaching materials are provided for each participant.
Students
High School Rising Juniors and Seniors:
Young Scholar research experiences are available to students from partner schools endorsed by teachers or other school staff. This internship will have you working in a state-of-the-art lab with fellow high school students. This experience will help make you a competitive applicant to top colleges. You will observe Center faculty and graduate students in the Center laboratories during the summer. You will be asked to prepare a research project to submit to the International Science and Engineering Fair in your area or the equivalent. You earn a stipend for summer participation, receive a Center certificate, and an additional payment for submitting your project. Experience labs and field trips and be a part of the future of electrical energy.
Middle School Students:
A weeklong summer day camp is available for students in partner schools in Florida, Arizona, and North Carolina. Priority will be given to students completing their 8th grade year in middle school, however, applications will be accepted from students in grades 6-9. Campers will learn about FREEDM Systems Center research laboratories, engage in hands-on activities, participate in career and college exploration activities, and experience field trips or tours. Lunches, snacks, and lab materials will be provided.
